Dalmahoy is home to two excellent golf courses, but is particularly well known for its championship East Course. The course was founded in 1927 by James Braid and is a terrific layout that has been a very popular Scottish venue for many years – but it can bite you if you’re not on your guard. There are a number of fantastic holes featuring raised greens, tricky dog-legs and wonderful par-3s. If the East course is too much for your heart then head West, the much younger brother that provides an altogether different test. It is probably the more enjoyable of the two as it is less bruising, and the back nine here is a fantastic challenge and throws down some superb approach shots, especially the run of holes towards the end.
Sitting amid a thousand acres of scenic parkland means you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh, yet it is only 20 minutes from the city centre and three miles from the M8 and M9 motorways. This is one of the go-to upmarket hotel and leisure resorts on the fringes of Edinburgh, complete with a variety of rooms including classic, deluxe, Manor House Doubles and suites. Dine in the Pentland Restaurant or The Brasserie and James Braid Bar, or enjoy the Cocktail Bar or Afternoon Tea.
