The Open Championship is the oldest golf tournament in the world and, arguably, the most prestigious.

Dating back to 1860, it is the only one of the four men’s major championships that takes place outside of the USA, and has been staged exclusively in the UK since its inception.

The inaugural Open Championship took place at Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire in October 1860. Musselburgh’s Willie Park Snr etched his name into history by winning that year.

Since then, most of the greatest players ever to pick up a golf club have emulated Park, becoming the ‘Champion Golfer of the Year’ in the process.

Indeed, as of 2024, 89 different golfers representing 14 countries have won The Open.

Aside from its location, what makes The Open unique to the other men’s majors is the fact that it is played on a links golf course.

To date, 14 different courses across the UK have been used to stage the championship on a rotational basis.

Given its status in the sport, St Andrews typically hosts the championship every five years or so.

Its closest challenger is Prestwick Golf Club, which staged 24 editions of the The Open, including the the first 12. However, it was retired from the Open rota in the 1920s.
