Ludvig Aberg’s former caddie Jack Clarke has detailed the reason behind their surprising split.

The pair, who won on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, as well as the Ryder Cup, worked their final tournament together at the Grant Thornton Invitational.

And speaking to bunkered.co.uk, Clarke has admitted he “didn’t see it coming”.

“He just turned around to me the week before last and said he was going to let me go, purely based on wanting more experience on the bag,” he explained.

“Before the conversation I didn’t see it coming because of the results we had together but I totally respect his decision.

“I was shocked and disappointed by the decision, but at the end of the day it’s his decision to hopefully become what he wants to become.”

Clarke, who said he would have liked “a little bit more of a chance”, added: “When he said the experience in majors, I can’t say too much about it because I don’t have that.”

Upon turning pro in June, Aberg tabbed Clarke as his full-time caddie with the pair finding incredible early success.

The Swedish prodigy picked up wins at the Omega European Masters and RSM Classic either side of Team Europe’s triumph in Rome.

Despite soaring into the world’s top 50, Aberg is yet to feature in a major championship, though the 23-year-old will get his first taste of that at Augusta in April.

The Masters was also set to be Clarke’s first tilt at a men’s major, but veteran caddie Joe Skovron will now have that job. And it’s that missed opportunity that hurts most for Clarke.

“I’m disappointed to not be able to continue with him after what we have been through, but it’s his personal choice and I understand it,” the Englishman added.

“I’ll be cheering him on from the sidelines. The predictions are realistic and hopefully with the team around him he can make them become a reality.”

Skovron, who has previously worked with Rickie Fowler and Tom Kim, will take up Aberg’s bag at The Sentry in Kapalua to kick off 2024.

As for Clarke, a year with Aberg and seven in the women’s game, has left him confident of finding a new bag.

“It’s definitely helped me with how I’ll move forward and how I do things,” he said.

“Hopefully it will get me recognised and I can continue that success with someone else.”
