40. Grantown on Spey
Highlands
Grantown on Spey is one of several superb offerings in the Highlands that won’t break the bank. It features a variety of short par-4s and well-guarded par-3s, none more so than the short 16th. You’ll probably only need a short iron for this – just don’t miss the green. Short but tight, it offers plenty of fun for less than £50.
39. Pitreavie
Fife
The course here opens with two par-5s, so you had better be warmed up before you get to the first tee. Set in Dunfermline, it’s a brilliant parkland test that is super value for your money. It’s a Dr Alister MacKenzie design that features plenty of two-tiered, sloping greens, that make it a test despite it not being long. A great option for golf in the east of Scotland.
38. Torwoodlee
Scottish Borders
With a green fee of just £40 throughout the summer, this Galashiels venue is a quality addition to our list and to your itinerary. Just two miles north of Galashiels, the club is a real hub of the community that welcomes visitors with open arms. At just over 6,000 yards from the back tees, it’s not a punishing test, but a tricky one nonetheless.
37. Weybrook
Hampshire
Weybrook is home to two golf courses, both of which can be enjoyed for under £50. The West course is the 18 hole layout at this Hampshire venue and it is well worth a visit. This is a chalk-based layout, which means that water drains incredibly well, making for firm and fast conditions. That, along with the superb layout make it a must in our top 50.
36. Pwllheli
Gwynedd
Part-links, part-parkland, this north Wales course is a stunner. With views over the Snowdonia mountains, the stretch of holes around the turn is fantastic, running along Cardigan Bay. With green fees under £50 both through the week and on weekends, this is one of the best value options in Wales.
35. Waterlooville
Hampshire
This is a fine Sir Henry Cotton-designed course. While the course underwent a redesign in the 1970s, much of the original landmarks and character remains, making this a popular spot. You can grab a bargain here during the week, with rounds in the afternoon starting at £45.
34. Longhirst Hall (Lakes)
Northumberland
The Lakes Course at Longhirst Hall is superb value. With over 40 bodies of water on the property, it’s a tough test, but one that is hugely enjoyable. The penultimate hole is played over, of course, water, and sets up an excellent, dramatic finish. With rates from £20, it’s a quality day out that won’t break the bank.
33. Peterculter
Aberdeenshire
The gateway to Royal Deeside, Peterculter follows the contours of the Dee, and is a top-quality course. With green fees from £25, it’s ideal for a scenic but challenging round. The course has been around since the 1990s, so it’s not the oldest in the area. However, what it might lack in history compared to neighbours, it absolutely makes up for it in value for money.
32. Anstruther
Fife
Anstruther is home to nine holes of stunning seaside golf. While it might not be the longest or most prestigious venue, it is certainly one of the most enjoyable. It’s also home to the Rockies, a blind, dog-leg par-3 that is virtually impossible to hit in regulation. Pay your £45 for 18 holes and head to the harbour for a post-round chippie. Job done.
31. Appleby
Cumbria
Appleby is one of Cumbria’s finest. The course is an ‘inland links’ thanks to its firm and fast nature, despite being miles from any coastline. You’ll have views of the North Pennines and the Lake District to enjoy, while playing on a bedrock of sandstone, making it one of the best draining courses in the area. For value, Appleby is right up there with the best, with a full day of golf just £40.
