Tommy Bolt

Bolt was one of the biggest stars in golf in the 1950s, winning the US Open in 1958. But he had a reputation of a different kind too. On one occasion while playing an event in Miami, he tossed his driver into a lake so deep a diver was unable to retrieve it, while on another his long-suffering caddie was forced to suggest a 2-iron, even though it was the wrong club, because it was the only iron left in the bag. “The driver goes the shortest distance when you throw it,” Bolt opined. “The putter flies farthest, followed by the sand wedge.” Bolt revealed he had misbehaved at least in part for the entertainment of the fans – but admitted it had overshadowed his exceptional game.
